10 Easy Ways to Get Healthy for Beginners, Where to Start? Nutrition Tips 

would like to have more energy feel healthier maybe improve the way that we look but what are the obstacles standing in the way of us actually being the person that we want to be and living the healthy lifestyle that we want to live in this video I’m gonna count down my top 10 simple and realistic recommendations on how you can begin improving your diet and improving your lifestyle so that you can reap all the benefits of being more healthy so this first tip is super simple and it just has to do with your mindset so oftentimes it’s really just human nature for us to fixate on the things that we don’t have or the things that we can’t do or the things that other people have and so first step is to focus on switching your thinking onto the things that you can do and the things that you do have and then being proud of yourself for the accomplishments that you do make so rather than focusing on well if I had all the time in the world I could make healthy food all the time and I could do this and I could afford a personal trainer take yourself out of the if this and what this ideal world is and focus on what the reality is so what’s something really realistic you could do make one meal for yourself per week or just add one new fruit or vegetable to your diet Komi or something like that and I’m gonna get into those tips later on but this one is just about focusing on the things that you can do and not giving yourself unrealistic expectations that are only gonna end up speaking you feel discouraged in the long run so let’s get into the good stuff the first step is going to be significantly limiting your intake of fast foods junk foods anything out of a vending machine we could call these convenience foods right cuz they’re really convenient and often times they’re really cheap so one way that you can start to transition out of eating those foods is just to make the transition to eating restaurant foods and this is gonna start helping you break the habit of meeting the super convenience because now you’re either gonna have to call in your order so it’ll be ready when you get there or actually wait for your food to be made at the restaurant while you’re waiting and of course as we go through this video I’m gonna give you the steps of how you then move off of the restaurant food but this is a really good kind of stepping stone for somebody who is used to eating fast food going through the drive-thru everyday just start making the transition from that convenience food to restaurant food and it’s gonna start helping you plan a little bit more for your meals know that hey I need to call in my meal about thirty minutes or whatever before you actually want to go pick it up and this is a really great little stepping stone to help you get off of junk foods and convenience foods that so many of us rely on as the primary part of our diet so the third step is that we want to be limiting our intake of fried foods so obviously french fries is maybe the first thing we think of but it’s important to recognize that potato chips also qualify as a fried food so the first place to start is by just kind of taking an inventory on how many fried foods are you eating for how many times a week are you actually eating fried foods and for some people when they kind of do this inventory they realize that they’re actually eating fried foods every single day so the step is to take the inventory figure out how much you’re eating fried foods and then start to just kind of slowly wean yourself off and go down slowly so here’s an example of a really unrealistic expectation for yourself I’m never gonna eat fried foods again you’re just kind of setting yourself up to fail but if you can give yourself something realistic like I’m going to cut out you know I’m gonna start by just cutting out one of my fried foods per week or I’m gonna start by just having one day per week where I don’t eat any fried foods so you’re giving yourself kind of a ridiculously simple expectation but you want to build wins for yourself because the more wins that you have and the more times that you feel that you’ve met your expectation the more it’s gonna kind of build your momentum and help push you forward so this is a great place to give yourself a realistic expectation and start minimizing the number of times per week that you’re eating fried foods so the ideal scene is for us to replace processed foods with natural foods sometimes people refer to them as Whole Foods and I have several videos that talk about the difference between whole and processed foods so I’m not going to go into that here but this tip is to rather than focusing on eating less processed foods to focus on eating more whole natural foods so a great place to start is with the ones that don’t require any cooking at all so nuts avocados the fruits and vegetables themselves like apples bananas carrots celery these are all things that don’t require any cooking or any preparation at all but these are really good whole natural foods to start integrating into your diet so give yourself a really reasonable expectation like I’m going to eat one whole food whole natural food per week or maybe that’s too easy for you maybe you want to start with doing one per day again remember that this isn’t about applying other people’s expectations to yourself it’s about giving yourself realistic expectations that you know you can reach so check out the videos where I talk about the difference between whole and processed foods and start focusing on adding more of those natural foods into your diet this next tip is to start eating more salads and if you’re somebody who never eats salad or you’re one of these people who says I hate salad then you’re just gonna have to find a way to start eating some salad and if it’s bacon bits and ranch dressing is the thing that gets you to eat salads then so be it I mean obviously the ideal scene is that we don’t have bacon bits on our salad but the trick here is remembering what’s realistic for you and doing things that you can actually see yourself doing so if you’re somebody who doesn’t ever eat salads give yourself a really simple expectation like okay I’m gonna one salad per week or if that sounds like too much for you start with one salad per month the idea of course is giving yourself things you can actually do so that these are gonna be wins for you that will encourage you forward so this tip is to wherever you’re at start adding more salads to your diet and just work up from there by far the cheapest and easiest way to eat healthy is to prepare our meals at home and cook our own meals now for a lot of people this sounds like rocket science you probably just turned off my video you’re like Corina don’t tell me to cook I don’t want to hear it and I understand where you’re coming from and for many years of my life I was in that exact same boat and I would not go anywhere near a kitchen I didn’t know what a spatula was but this is another area where we can kind of build our way up and I’m actually gonna have a whole series of videos called the stupid easy cooking show where I provide you with really simple ways to create meals at home but in this video I’m just gonna give you the tip on where to start so a good place to start is by taking snacks with you carrying snacks with you to work or just wherever you’re going because this usually is something that doesn’t actually require any cooking at all so something like makes nuts or carrying around avocados or bananas or apples and again it kind of relates back to that tip about eating whole natural foods but just the process of going to the grocery store buying foods and then actually eating them is a really important step towards improving our health and our lifestyle another really great thing is back to our topic of salads here’s another thing that really doesn’t require any cooking at all we’re just gonna kind of throw all the ingredients in a bowl so maybe the place where you need to start is just by accepting that you can cook and it’s totally not rocket science it’s really simple it’s something that you can do and one day you will be doing and just start getting comfortable with this idea of yourself as a chef and this idea that you can make your own meals at home and you can start just by something really simple like I’m gonna cook one meal at home per month or one meal at home per week and then go up from there and stay tuned for the stupid easy cooking show where I’m gonna give you some really simple ideas of things that you can make yourself another important aspect of having a healthy diet is having variety in our diet and realizing that different foods offer different nutritive benefits so there are a couple things I want to mention in this tip and one of them is trying new foods and realizing that there are hundreds of different fruits and vegetables out there and they’re all different and they all offer different benefits and of course different flavors so one thing that you can do one good little step you can do is to integrate or try a new fruit or vegetable and again give yourself a really easy expectation like I’m gonna try one new fruit or vegetable per week and we’ll at the end of the month now you have four new foods you’ve added to your diet so if you can challenge yourself to try new foods and taste new foods that’s gonna be a really really good step towards eating healthier and another aspect of this is thinking about the variety in your diet and recognizing that you know when you’re just starting out it’s okay if you’re eating kind of the same things every day you don’t have to fixate on this idea of variety but as you move forward and you incorporate more things into your diet variety is one thing you want to think about and my favorite way to gauge the variety of my diet is just looking at the different colors of foods on my plate so if we think about cabbage for instance is purple eggplants are purple when we think about our greens we could talk about kale or spinach or apples when we talk about things that are orange probably the first thing that comes to mind is oranges right and this is also a really good tip for kids because you can encourage them to think about having lots of colors on their plate and at the end of the day you can kind of ask yourself well did I have a lot of different colors in my meals today but I have a lot of different colors or was I just eating white foods or was I just eating yellow foods or something like that so two parts of this tip one is trying new fruits and vegetables and giving yourself a really easy expectation like I’m gonna try one new vegetable per week and then also to focus on having variety in your diet and focus on trying different colors of foods the only disclaimer here is that artificially colored processed foods don’t count we want to actually have these whole natural colorful foods in our diet [Music] so moving away from the discussion of food a little bit let’s talk about your body now whether you are trying to lose weight or not recognize the importance of cardiovascular exercise for your overall health and well-being and realize that your heart is a muscle just like your leg muscles just like your biceps and if you want it to be nice and strong through your whole life you’ve got to exercise it and you’ve got to strengthen it and cardiovascular exercise is how we do that and if we think about the prevalence of heart disease and heart attacks then we can see how important it is that we strengthen our heart by doing things like exercise so making time for fitness making time for exercise is gonna be a really important part of your healthy lifestyle but of course we can start small and build up so maybe you’re just gonna start with five minutes per day or if that sounds like too much start with one minute per day no more no less and as you go and make that a habit it’ll get easier and easier and easier to build up a little bit from there also realize that you don’t have to necessarily go to the gym there are a lot of different ways that you can become more physically active so joining a soccer team playing disc golf taking your dog running in the park if you have a baby or you know somebody who has a baby carrying around a baby or even lifting up and playing with the baby is a really really really good exercise simple things like if you’re on the phone in your house you actually walk around the house while you’re on the phone rather than sitting on the couch the whole time or maybe while you’re watching TV you actually are gonna do some sit-ups or do some stretches you know while you’re watching a TV show things like incorporating more activity into the things you’re already doing so calf raises or squats that you do while you’re brushing your teeth or while you’re doing dishes so if you can’t necessarily make time for physical activity find ways to make your daily activities more active and a classic example is taking the stairs instead of the elevator so realize the importance of integrating Fitness into your lifestyle even if you aren’t necessarily trying to lose weight and realize that you can start small and you can make these activities that you do things that are fun and like I said joining a soccer team or grabbing some friends and just going for a run around the block but start getting creative with ways to become more physically active and start making time even if it’s just one minute per day so the next step in improving your health is going to be finding a farmers market near you and there’s a great website called local harvest org where you can search by zip code or if you just put farmers market and your zip code into any search engine engine you should be able to find farmers markets in your area so why do you want to shop at a farmers market well let me tell you number one this is probably the cheapest way to eat healthy and eat organic foods because you’re taking out all the middlemen that have to get paid when you buy something from a grocery store also Foods in the grocery store travel some of them several thousand miles between where they’re actually picked or where they’re actually grown and your grocery store so that travel time is actually going to decrease some of the nutrition in the food so when we go to a farmers market usually that farmer actually picked that food maybe that warning and so you get the idea this food is a lot fresher and there’s a lot less travel time in between that food coming out of the ground and that food going into your shopping cart and again this is another place where you can build up like the first step is gonna be going to the farmers market for the very first time and I remember my first time going to the farmers market and then you’ll just build up from there so ideally you want to be going to the farmers market every week obviously that’s not gonna be possible to do every single week but you can build up and you can focus on and be making this kind of a ritual for yourself which is what I’ve done so shopping at the farmers market not only does it give you this cool opportunity to meet the person who’s growing your food or meet the person who’s raising the cow but it’s also gonna actually be a lot cheaper than buying the same foods organically in a supermarket another aspect of improving your health is learning a little bit about health and maybe that seems obvious but the point of this tip is that there is so much that we gain just from educating ourselves a little bit and just from taking a little bit of time to learn something or understand a new concept so this concept of processed foods versus whole natural foods is pretty basic but if you can grasp the difference between a processed food and a natural food then that one understanding is gonna carry you really far in your quest for internet at your fingertips there’s just endless amounts of information that you could educate yourself with so the other part of this tip that I want to mention is to recognize our limiting factors so a lot of you have written to me and asked about food combining and the reason that I don’t talk a lot about food combining is because that’s a pretty it’s pretty advanced on the scale of of health so if we thought about ourselves on the scale and here’s this person eating junk food eating fast food every day you know food combining is pretty far over here so at the point that you’ve gotten off the junk food you’re cooking at home you’re not eating processed foods anymore then maybe you want to start looking at something a little more technical which is this idea of food combining and the reason that I’m reluctant to talk a lot about food combining is because for me it was actually a limiting factor so I started doing this research about food combining and what time of day you’re supposed to eat this food and you can combine these foods or not and it ended up I’d get so frustrated with trying to meet all of these rules and meet all of these expectations that I would just blow it off and go get junk food and go get fast food or something so as you go through these different tips and these different ideas you want to become aware of where there are limiting factors that are actually preventing you from getting healthy recognize that eating salads is gonna be really good for you and certainly this idea of food combining is important but you don’t want to not eat a salad because you’re worried that you’re not gonna get the food combining right so recognize where your limiting factors are and just do what you can do again this kind of comes back to the tip about focusing on what you can do rather than what you can’t and make a little time to educate yourself and learn a little something and realize that learning that little something offers you a lot of benefit when it comes to improving your health so in future videos I’m going to bring you the stupid easy cooking show which is the cooking show for people who don’t cook the people who could never
